The hallways are buzzing again, the classrooms are active, the learning spaces around campus are filled with conversation and laughter: school is back. As our school community reacclimates to its routines after the two-week break, our middle school faculty are devoting some intentional time dedicated to re-establishing norms and reinforcing the expectations that support the important teaching and learning that happens on a daily basis at Live Oak. Much like our counterparts in lower school, one area of focus in middle school has been around helping students enter into the new year by building on the successes of the previous semester, while helping frame their work and actions through the lens of maximizing their positive impact on their classrooms and the broader school culture and climate.
Among the many reflective activities that middle school students are engaging in over these first few weeks back include sixth graders checking in on the progress laid out in their Goal Ladders, currently on display in the Middle School Commons. Sixth graders crafted their goals earlier in the fall, but are using the opportunity to evaluate their concrete action steps toward achieving their goals up to this point and moving forward. Sharing their goals in the hallway adds a layer of accountability to them. Middle school students also had some fun acting out skits this past week depicting behavioral and academic expectations and have been contemplating Words of the Day to serve as reminders of their personal and academic agency.
We know that the work of teaching and learning never really stops. While a break offers some valuable temporary departure from these routines, at some level our students, faculty, and staff are always reflecting on their work, their effort, their successes and challenges. We know there is always some consideration of the formal and informal goals we are setting for ourselves for the new semester. With these foundations, reflections, and goals in mind, we are excited for the semester ahead. We are excited to see how our collective goals inspire our community. We are invested in supporting continued growth and development among our students, faculty, and staff. And we are eager to continue building on the impactful work we have already done to this point. Wishing our community a Happy New Year and a purposeful start to the semester ahead!
