Wearable Design Fair

By: Jean DeWitt and Halen Groce, 4 West Teachers
During the first quarter of fourth grade, in math, we explore different forms of measurement: liters, kilograms, inches, and centimeters. As part of our measurement exploration, students embarked on a design challenge. Partners were given the task of creating a “wearable” for their partner. Each child identified something they wanted created for them to wear at the “Wearables Design Fair.”
The designers faced multiple challenges to create jewelry, hats, skirts, purses, shields, leg guards, and even shoes in three days. The designers came up with ideas, took measurements to ensure a good fit, and sketched out a model from which to design their prototype. The primary construction element for the “wearables” was cardboard. Students used a variety of techniques to prepare the cardboard such as rubbing and molding cardboard pieces. A variety of methods were employed to join together pieces with connecting elements. This included staples, yarn, tape, and hot glue from the vast array of materials from the ChangeMaker Lab. Students consulted each other on a variety of strategies to bring their design from idea to prototype.

In addition to developing their skills with materials and tools, students felt they worked on developing their compassion and empathy for each other. Designs did not always come out as expected and sometimes designers had to start all over again. Striking a balance between the idea, reality of the materials available, and time constraints was difficult but these designers pulled it all together. Everyone had something to present.

Parents and grandparents joined the designers in a celebration of the creations. Designers discussed their creations with all the guests, impressing everyone with their creativity, imagination, and flexibility to meet the Wearables Design Challenge 2024.
