Sharing Identity & Building Connection

In the early part of the school year, all Live Oak students take an active role in building a culture of inclusion and connection in their classroom communities in order to set the best conditions for learning in the year ahead. It’s important that students feel well known at school and engaging in activities that help them reflect on their own identities and the identities of others encourages these feelings. Students at Live Oak do self reflection at every grade level and in a lot of ways.  
Kindergartners give mini presentations about their families. First graders spend time in the ChangeMaker Lab crafting self-portraits. Fifth graders design their own unique “seats at the table.” Third graders take a moment to showcase a special skill or important part of their identity. Middle School students created identity water bottles and mapas de identidad in Spanish class.

These activities allow for the expression and celebration of our students’ unique identities, while shining light on the diverse perspectives and experiences that define our classroom communities. Faculty are learning about the backgrounds and interests that their students’ bring to school and that inform the pathways the group and the individuals will take in pursuit of new understandings. School is ready for learning!
